Shelton native Sean Dehart was the local man involved in the incident which took the lives of two - including Riley C. Howell, who likely saved lives by tackling the gunman - and injured four others on Tuesday, April 30.

The gunman, Trystan Andrew Terrell, a former student, appeared in district court in Mecklenburg County on Thursday, May 2. He reportedly targeted the Kennedy Building on the UNCC campus, went into a classroom and opened fire.

Terrell stands charged with two counts of murder, four counts of attempted murder, four counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, possessing a firearm on educational property and discharging a firearm on educational property.

Dehart graduated from the Cardinal Gibbons High School in Raleigh, and is a member of the class of 2021. According to his Facebook page, he is originally from Shelton and is a diehard fan of the New York Yankees.

Dehart has been released from the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.

Drew Pescaro, 19, Emily Houpt, 23, and Rami Al-Ramadhan, 20, all remain hospitalized after suffering injuries. Howell and Ellis “Reed” Parlier were killed in the shooting.

“There is nothing normal about the way our community has responded, both in rising to confront the evil as it occurred, and in the aftermath to provide resources and reassurance to those in physical and emotional need,” UNCC Chancellor Philip Dubois said. “There is nothing normal about the 8,000 people who packed Halton Area last night for the beautiful candlelight vigil orchestrated by our students, or about the thousands of other individuals who showed their support by watching the vigil online or staging vigils in other locations. Niner Nation has spoken in word and deed.”
